The Homestead Journal ~Week 39~ The Mini Vacation

Homestead Happenings
We had a blessed Sunday with friends. We had a pretty lazy week around the homestead. One of the downsides of renting is you have grand ideas, but then, its really not "our" place. We will start planning winterizing the house and the gardens next week.

What We Are Learning About
We are still working on our insect studies. Last week we posted the hornworm, with the eggs, we covered it and let the parasites hatch. It was neat watching the braconid wasps break out, but the process was torture for the worm, It took the last bit out of it and it writhed the entire time till it died. We kept the jar contained and the wasps also died. ( You can see them flying around the jar. And the empty cocoons.) The wasps are beneficial to the garden, but they died so rapidly, we didn't get them out.. We did have 4 others worms on our tomatoes.

Quinten has been practicing origami. And making up math games with monopoly money.
Its good to know these half lost game pieces are good for something!
Jacob is studying economics, as you can see below, its extremely exciting.

Our Adventures
We had an adventure this weekend. We took a $100 vacation. Staying with friends, bringing food to cook, just had to pay for gas. We left last Saturday night and headed to the Johnson's and spent Sunday with them. Their baby girl had her baby blessing. It was beautiful. Monday we headed out early to visit the Perez's then took a scenic route through Casey County. Its beautiful there. There is a little town called Liberty.. It looks just like NH, but its warm like KY!

Thursday Joe and the children went out to Metcaff County to help a friend. She had some work for  Joe and the boys.. And a huge pear tree the children took home a bushel!

  1. How blessed to have a basket of pears! Wow!

I read your little story of Callie. Very touching and sweet. We had a dog named Cassie we had to eventually put down. She went to Lithuania with us and spent the last few months of her life very happy. Then, she went down hill fast. We think it was cancer. She also went blind in one eye. We buried her in the woods in Lithuania. Putting that dog down was harder than I thought it would be. We loved that dog.
