The Homestead Journal~ Week 38 ~ The Scout Advancements

Homestead Happenings
We had a blessed Sabbath. I love my calling, but I really miss being in the adult classes. Luckily the children are so sweet.
Our garden has been taking hits all summer. See our newest "friend" in the photos below. I am still getting some tomatoes, so I still consider it successful. We have learned all the what not to do's. Another plus. We are prepping the big garden for next year and going to build some green houses and cold frames.
Its also getting to the end of the summer and our off grid experiment is almost to a close. We still plan to live off grid, but we have to make a few adjustments, I will say this had been greatly beneficial. I will do a separate post this week or next on our experiment.
Also, I have started a new blog series for the month of Sept. Each day I will prepare a simple, low cost healthy stove top or no cook meal. Stay tuned! If you haven't already hit subscribe on the side bar and enter your email to be notified of each new post.

What We Are Learning About

We are still working on out bug unit.. We didn't do much by way of formal lessons this week.. It IS still summer ;) They have been outside playing or have their noses stuck in books. Usually at the same time.. Jacob is doing great in Seminary and has 17 of 25 scripture mastery's memorized.

Our Adventures
We went and visited the cows, as we do twice a week. We also had scouts this week. They did a well overdue court of honor for Jacob where he finally received his First Class and Star badge. He will have his Life badge in December. It was also our turn to clean the church so Thursday the family went while I was at work. Friday they hit the park with some friends from out of town, then took them on a tour of the area.  Sadly, I had to work, but I was able to visit with them afterwards. We had a great taco dinner and s'mores afterwards. Then the dads and children played a game of apples to apples.

Saturday we went to our Ward Activity at the YMCA. Then we hit the road to go to our friends house for the night. Joe got to hang out with his BFF ;)

Challenges/Accomplishments This Week
I have a sweet tooth. I have done well to cut out processed foods and such. I try not to keep candy and cookies and such on hand, with exception of the treats I keep for the children. ( I use candy as a reward on occasion.) I have had a rough week.. We have bought ice cream twice already!

We are also working on the children's chores. For example, the correct way to hang laundry.

"Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself." 2 Nephi 2:27

  1. That particular tomato worm won't be a bother much longer. Those white things are a parasite (wasp, i think) that uses them as a living incubator/food source... good idea to relocate it away from the tomatoes in the meantime, though... they can eat a lot in a short time!

  2. Oh, my goodness - sleeping with the kitty! How cute! And a very tolerate cat. (We don't have one of those here. ::sigh::)

I'm interested in your off-the-grid experience. No, I don't plan on going off-the-grid, but to get ideas on living more frugally and simply.

    1. Almost every cat we have ever owned has been like this. This one especially loves to cuddle tho. He initiates it most of the time.

  3. I was very interested in your caterpillar image. I found it was a tobacco hornworm with cocoons of braconid wasp larvae. I was thrilled to find a picture of your picture (not quite) in our guide. Interesting find!

Love the clothes line picture...that's probably what ours would look like if the kids hung the laundry. :-)

We are going to be up in Kentucky this next week. Maybe we can get together for a few hours.
